6 Questions with GERMEIN
Growing up jamming together on their family farm in South Australia, sisters Georgia (guitar, keys), Ella (bass, electric cello), and Clara Germein (drums) have since been turning heads across the globe with their unique brand of catchy indie rock pop songs & signature harmonies.
Having opened for PHIL COLLINS and toured with LITTLE MIX & JESS GLYNNE to name a few, GERMEIN’s energetic and charismatic live show has been described as nothing short of mesmerising.
Taking their lead from strong female artists like HAIM, CHVRCHES, and TEGAN & SARA; Germein possess the kind of close musical partnership that can only be shared by siblings. Inspired by the vocal harmonies of iconic bands such as QUEEN and FLEETWOOD MAC, both whom they have been honoured to appear on the lineup with at the Isle of Wight Festival.
Germein recorded their debut single ‘Talking’ in their home studio, produced by Georgia Germein. The song was launched on Triple J Home and Hosed, and went on to enjoy airplay on both Triple J and the Hit Network across Australia. “The energy put into this song has paid off — with style, plenty of sass, edgy guitars, & a soaring chorus shows off a range of influences. Their tight harmonies show off how perfectly their voices work together & prove that they have musical finesse to be reckoned with” Line of Best Fit (UK)
The girls have been touring their music extensively across the UK and Europe. Recently they were shortlisted in the top 6 unsigned UK acts in a competition run by HOAX to open for ED SHEERAN on the closing night of his record-breaking Divide World Tour. They won Most Popular Pop Artist in the South Australian Music Awards 2019 & 2020.
We had a chance to talk to GERMEIN on the release of their ‘I Want It That Way’ cover with Chloe Leigh!
Hey girls, welcome to our 6 Questions series! Congratulations on the second release of your ‘Sister Session’ cover series! What a great Christmas gift for your listeners, tell us more about how this project came to life?
Hey! Thanks so much for having us! So our ‘Sister Session’ series came about in the midst of Covid earlier this year. We had our flights booked to head back to the UK & Europe in March for a year of touring and festivals, but like everyone else, we were grounded at home. Touring and live shows are at the heart and soul of what we do, so we thought it could be fun to do some ‘virtual jams’ with artists we’ve met over the years as a way of bringing live music to our fans, wherever they might be in the world. It started off as just a fun little project, but we got such a great response from the videos, so we have kept making more. Very excited to be releasing some of the tracks on Spotify as a little Christmas gift for our fans.
2) How has COVID-19 affected your creative process + music career in general?
We had a few big festivals and tours organised in the UK, Europe, and Australia for 2020, which unfortunately had to be cancelled or postponed. But we’ve been grateful for this time at home in the Adelaide Hills to recoup after a few massive years of touring, and focus on writing and recording new music. Of course we really miss touring, but it’s actually been nice to have some solid time to dedicate to being creative, without the distraction of being on the road.
3) How did this collaboration with Chloe Leigh happen? Did you meet online or is she a musician you’ve met in person?
We first me Chloe Leigh backstage at the Isle of Wight Festival in the UK in 2019. She was such a lovely gal with a really unique sound, and so we invited her to open for us at a show we were doing in Brighton on our UK tour later that year. We are so excited to have Chloe join us for this cover of ‘I Want It That Way’ by the Backstreet Boys — she brings such a cool vibe to the song! Be sure you check out her original music too!
4) What has been the most memorable performance for you in your journey so far?
We have played some amazing shows that we will definitely never forget — including opening for Phil Collins in New Zealand, Little Mix on their Summer Hits Tour in the UK, Ronan Keating in Germany, and Jess Glynne in the UK. We also especially love our own headline tours where we get to really interact with our fans on stage and have them sing along with us, as well as have a chat to them in person after the show and just hang out.
5) What’s it like being sisters and being in a band together? Do you work together well? Do you feel like you can express yourself without a filter?
Haha, yep! There is definitely a lot of unfiltered expressing being a family band! As with all sisters we have our moments, but after many years of being on the road together we have learnt what buttons not to press..! Each of us bring different strengths to the group, so we’re pretty lucky we can work well together most of the time haha!
6) What’s a message you’d like to convey to your fans that are reading this interview?
Stay positive, stay safe, be kind to each other! ….. and add our new music to your playlists haha! ;) Hope to see you guys at a live gig sometime real soon.
